Homemade Hormone Balancing Blend for Menstrual Cramp Relief

Table of Contents

This post is about women’s health, hormones, menstrual cramps, and my personal experience using a homemade hormone balancing essential oil blend. It may be a little personal, but if you have ever dealt with intense period pain, heavy cycles, or uncomfortable hormonal changes, you know how hard it can be to get through a normal day.

After my daughter August was born, I noticed several changes that seemed hormone related. At first, I brushed them off because postpartum recovery can be unpredictable. I had significant postpartum hair loss, and because I was breastfeeding, my period did not return until she was about 13 months old. When it finally came back, the first cycle was not as bad as I had expected. I had heard many stories about difficult postpartum periods, so I felt relieved.

The following month was completely different. My bleeding became much heavier, and the cramps were intense. The pain felt overwhelming, almost like my body was trying to turn itself inside out. It reminded me of labor pain, but without the purpose or excitement of meeting a baby at the end. To make matters more stressful, my husband was going to be out of town during my next cycle, and I knew I could not manage that level of pain while also taking care of a toddler.

That is when I started researching natural menstrual cramp support and asking friends who were familiar with natural wellness. After reading, asking questions, and experimenting carefully, I put together an essential oil blend for hormone balance and menstrual discomfort. For me personally, it made a noticeable difference.

I first used the blend diluted in a carrier oil and rubbed it onto my lower abdomen. That helped, although I still felt a few mild cramps. Later, I added the same blend to my diffuser, and the discomfort eased even more. I cannot say that this will work the same way for everyone, and I am not claiming it is a cure. I can only share what worked for me and how I used it.

Always check with your healthcare provider before using essential oils, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, have a medical condition, or are using them around children. I am not a medical professional, and this information is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition.

Common Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance:

  • Infertility
  • Irregular or heavy menstrual cycles
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Difficulty losing or gaining weight
  • Fatigue or insomnia
  • Digestive issues
  • Low libido
  • Brain fog
  • Headaches

Hormone imbalance symptoms can have many causes, and they should not be ignored if they are severe, ongoing, or suddenly different from your normal cycle. Heavy bleeding, extreme pain, dizziness, or unusual symptoms should be discussed with a qualified healthcare provider.

My Favorite Essential Oils For Hormone Balance & Menstrual Pain

My favorite essential oils for this homemade hormone balancing blend are clary sage, frankincense, geranium, marjoram, and lavender. These oils are often used in natural wellness routines for relaxation, menstrual comfort, and emotional support. When used properly and diluted safely, they can be a helpful part of a self-care routine during your cycle.

Clary sage is one of the main oils I used in this blend. It is commonly associated with women’s wellness and menstrual support. Some people use it for cramping, mood support, and hormone-related discomfort. Clary sage should not be used during pregnancy because it may encourage contractions. If you are trying to conceive, pregnant, breastfeeding, or unsure whether it is appropriate for you, ask your healthcare provider before using it.

Frankincense is a versatile essential oil that many people use for calming, grounding, and general wellness. It is often included in blends intended to support inflammation-related discomfort, relaxation, and balanced mood. In this recipe, it adds a warm, earthy aroma and blends well with floral and herbal oils.

Lavender is one of the most well-known essential oils for relaxation. It has a gentle floral scent and is commonly used to support rest, calm the mind, and relax the body. For menstrual discomfort, I like lavender because it makes the blend feel soothing and comforting, especially when diffused or applied to the abdomen with a carrier oil.

Geranium has a sweet, floral scent and is often used in blends created for PMS support, emotional balance, and women’s wellness. I like adding geranium because it rounds out the aroma and gives the blend a softer, more pleasant scent.

Marjoram is another oil traditionally used for muscle comfort and menstrual support. It has an herbal, slightly warm aroma and works well with lavender, clary sage, and frankincense. In this blend, marjoram helps create a relaxing and comforting combination.

This hormone balancing essential oil blend is not safe for pregnancy. Essential oils are concentrated and should be used with care. Always dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin, avoid sensitive areas, and discontinue use if irritation occurs. If your menstrual cramps are severe or your bleeding is unusually heavy, it is important to seek medical advice rather than relying only on home remedies.

Hormone Balancing Oil

To make a simple hormone balancing oil for menstrual cramp support, combine 2 drops each of clary sage, frankincense, marjoram, geranium, and lavender with 2 tablespoons of your carrier oil of choice. Good carrier oil options include fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, or olive oil.

Once blended, apply a small amount to your lower abdomen and gently massage it into the skin. You can use it a few times per day as needed during your cycle. Be sure to do a small patch test first if you have sensitive skin. If you notice redness, itching, burning, or irritation, wash the area and stop using the blend.

You can also use these same essential oils in a diffuser or add them to a magnesium oil spray, as described below. I found that combining topical use with diffusing was helpful for me, but you can choose the method that best fits your routine.

Homemade Hormone Balancing Spray

I also made this blend into a homemade hormone balancing spray using magnesium oil. To make the spray, add 3 drops each of clary sage, frankincense, marjoram, and lavender to magnesium oil spray. Apply it to your lower abdomen up to 3 times per day if you are not also using the oil blend.

If you are using both the hormone balancing oil and the magnesium oil spray, you may prefer to use the magnesium spray 1 to 2 times per day and the oil blend once per day. Listen to your body and use the smallest amount that feels helpful.

To make magnesium oil spray, boil 1/2 cup of distilled water. Pour the hot water over 1/2 cup of magnesium flakes and stir until the flakes are fully dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool completely before adding the essential oils. Once cooled, add 3 drops each of clary sage, frankincense, marjoram, and lavender, then pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

Magnesium oil can feel tingly on the skin, especially at first. Avoid applying it to freshly shaved skin or broken skin, as it may sting. If it feels too strong, rinse it off or dilute it with more distilled water.

Diffusing

When diffusing essential oils, always follow the instructions for your specific diffuser. For this menstrual support blend, I sometimes add 1 drop each of frankincense, lavender, clary sage, marjoram, and geranium. Other times, I use a simpler combination of 2 drops frankincense, 2 drops clary sage, and 2 drops lavender.

Diffusing can be a gentle way to enjoy the aroma of the oils without applying them to your skin. It may also be a good option if you prefer a relaxing environment while resting, stretching, or using a heating pad during your cycle. Use essential oils in a well-ventilated room, and be cautious when diffusing around babies, children, pets, or anyone with respiratory sensitivities.

I am not here to claim that essential oils are a miracle solution or that one brand is the only brand worth using. I have used several brands with good results. My goal is simply to share the homemade hormone balancing blend that helped me manage menstrual discomfort and feel more comfortable during my cycle.

Every body is different, and what worked for me may not work the same way for someone else. Use this recipe thoughtfully, check with your healthcare provider when needed, and pay attention to what your body is telling you.
