Creamy and delicious, Iced Coffee Protein Shake is the perfect morning wake-up drink. It’s nutrient-dense, satisfying, and made with only natural, whole-food ingredients—no store-bought protein powders, no artificial sweeteners, and no added sugar unless you choose to add a touch.

I love coffee, but after a bout of stomach issues a few years ago I had to cut it back. Now that I feel better, I’ve eased back into enjoying coffee—but sensibly. My doctor advised drinking coffee in moderation and to eat something before drinking it, so I combined breakfast and coffee into one satisfying sip. The result is this iced coffee protein shake: a breakfast-and-caffeine solution that’s gentle on the stomach and energizing for the day.
When summer heats up, an ice-cold coffee shake becomes even more appealing. This version is thick, creamy and made entirely from natural ingredients. I avoid powdered protein and artificial sweeteners; instead I rely on real foods to add flavor, creaminess and nutrition.

For the liquid base I use soy milk. Soy milk is a plant-based option that provides a good amount of protein compared with many other non-dairy milks, plus fiber and healthy fats. Fortified soy milk often contains vitamins like A, D and B-complex, and minerals such as calcium, potassium and iron, supporting overall nutrition. Because soy milk is naturally a bit sweeter than some alternatives, I didn’t need to add refined sugar.
Frozen banana creates the shake’s silky texture and adds natural sweetness, keeping the recipe free of added refined sugar. If you prefer, you can add a small amount of maple syrup or honey to taste.
To boost protein and healthy fats naturally—without packaged powders—I add ground hemp seeds. Hemp seeds have a mild, nutty flavor and are rich in amino acids, plant protein, essential fatty acids (including omega-3s), and minerals. They help make this shake truly filling and nutritious.
The star ingredient is, of course, the coffee. Use your preferred brewed coffee—cold or room temperature works fine. Instant espresso or a strong brewed coffee delivers bold flavor if you want a stronger coffee profile. Adjust the strength to your taste.
